Devotions — Week of October 4, 2026

Three days from this week's sermon on stewardship, building the church with what Jesus has given, the unique glory of serving with His gifts, and the salvation that is God's gift before any gift we give in return.

1

Building with What Jesus Has Given

Matthew 16:18; Acts 11:25–26

“I will build my church.”

Matthew 16 · 18

Jesus said, “I will build my church.” The church is not ultimately a building, a program, or an organization. It is Jesus’ people, those who have been called out to follow Him. And Jesus is still building His church today.

So what does stewardship have to do with building the church?

Stewardship is “building the church with what Jesus has given.” Everything we have ultimately comes from Jesus. Our time, abilities, opportunities, money, spiritual gifts, and relationships are gifts from Him. Stewardship is taking those gifts and putting them to work for the good of His church.

In Acts 11, the church in Antioch needed teachers. Jesus provided Saul. The church needed spiritual guidance. Jesus provided prophets. The church in Jerusalem needed financial relief. Jesus provided it through the believers in Antioch.

Notice the pattern: Jesus provides what His church needs, and He often provides it through His people.

That means your gifts matter. Your time matters. Your willingness to serve matters. You may look at what you have and think it is insignificant, but Jesus delights in using ordinary people and ordinary gifts to build His church.

You don’t have to be someone else. You simply need to faithfully use what Jesus has already given you.

Gospel Focus: Jesus does not need us because He is lacking something. He invites us to participate in what He is already doing. The church belongs to Him, and He is the One who builds it.

Questions to Consider
  1. What has Jesus given me that could be used to build up His church?
  2. Am I primarily thinking about stewardship as giving money, or am I seeing it as using all that Jesus has given me?
  3. Where might there be a need in my church that Jesus could be asking me to help meet?
Prayer Prompt

Ask Jesus to show you one gift, ability, resource, or opportunity He has given you and how you can use it to build up His church today.

2

Stewardship Is Uniquely Glorious

1 Peter 4:10–11; Romans 12:4–8

“As each has received a gift, use it to serve one another, as good stewards of God’s varied grace:”

1 Peter 4 · 10

Why does Jesus work through His people instead of simply providing everything directly? Because stewardship is uniquely glorious.

Peter says that we are to use the gifts we have received to serve one another as “good stewards of God’s varied grace.” The goal is that “in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ.”

God could accomplish His purposes without us. He doesn’t need our money, our time, or our abilities. But He gives us the incredible privilege of participating in His work.

Paul describes the church as one body with many different members. Not everyone has the same function. Some teach. Some serve. Some encourage. Some give generously. Some lead. Some show mercy.

The point isn’t that everyone should do everything. The point is that everyone has something to contribute.

Think about a father building something with his child. The father may not need the child’s help. But when the child picks up a tool and participates, there is something deeply satisfying about watching the child join in the work.

In a similar way, God gives His children the privilege of participating in what He is doing. When we faithfully use what He has given us to serve His church, He is glorified.

That changes the way we think about serving.

We aren’t merely filling a volunteer position. We aren’t simply donating money. We aren’t just checking something off our church responsibility list.

We are taking what Jesus has given us and using it to build His house.

Gospel Focus: Jesus has already done the work necessary to save us. Our stewardship does not earn His love or secure our salvation. Instead, because we have received His grace, we have the joy of responding to that grace by serving Him and His people.

Questions to Consider
  1. What spiritual gifts or abilities has God given me?
  2. How am I currently using those gifts to serve others?
  3. Is there a place where I have been treating church involvement as an obligation rather than an opportunity to glorify God?
  4. What would it look like for me to use my gifts more intentionally?
Prayer Prompt

Thank God for the gifts He has given you. Ask Him to help you recognize where those gifts can be used to strengthen and serve His church.

3

It All Starts with a Gift

Ephesians 2:8–9

“For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”

Ephesians 2 · 8–9

After talking about giving, serving, time, money, and spiritual gifts, we need to remember something very important:

It all starts with a gift, and the gift isn’t yours.

Paul writes, “For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God.”

Before Jesus asks us to steward what He has given us, He gives us something we could never give ourselves.

Salvation.

We are saved by grace through faith. We aren’t saved because we served enough, gave enough, volunteered enough, or became good enough. Salvation is God’s gift.

That means the order matters.

We don’t give to Jesus so that He will save us. We don’t serve the church so that God will love us. We don’t give money so that God will protect us or give us something in return.

We first receive from Jesus. Then, having received His grace, we respond with our lives.

Jesus’ gift is far greater than anything we could ever give Him. He gives forgiveness for sin. He makes us right with God. Through faith in His death and resurrection, He gives us life.

So before asking, “What am I going to give Jesus?” there is a more important question: “Have I received Jesus’ gift of salvation by faith?”

If you have trusted Christ, then stewardship becomes a response of gratitude. Jesus has already given you everything you need for salvation. Now you can take the time, money, abilities, relationships, and opportunities He has entrusted to you and use them for His glory.

You aren’t paying Jesus back. You are simply using His gifts to build His church.

Gospel Focus: The gospel is not about what you can do for God. It begins with what God has done for you through Jesus. Salvation is a gift received by faith, not something earned by works. Our stewardship flows from that grace.

Questions to Consider
  1. Have I personally received Jesus’ gift of salvation by faith?
  2. Do I ever treat my giving or serving as a way of earning God’s favor?
  3. How does remembering God’s grace change the way I think about my time, money, abilities, and possessions?
  4. What is one area of my life that I need to place more fully in Jesus’ hands?
Prayer Prompt

Thank Jesus for the gift of salvation. Ask Him to help you live as a faithful steward of everything He has entrusted to you and to use those gifts for His glory and the building up of His church.
