Did you know that our church has a weekly newsletter that comes out on Tuesdays called the "Beacon"? Call the office at 361-293-2319 or comment below if you would like to sign up. There is a weekly article, prayer list, event reminders, and even library menu. Here is part of this week's article, "What is exposition?":What is exposition? Holding a text and answering, “What did the author mean?” Why is exposition important? So often we hold the bible and jump to “What does this text mean to me?” This devotional approach to the bible isn’t evil, but it can lead to some errors. First, we can become self indulgent and therapeutic in our bible reading. The bible only says things that encourage me or fit my needs. If I’m being unfaithful to my spouse, I’ll seldom notice God’s hatred of divorce. Second, our “What’s in it for me” reading of scripture betrays we don’t understand what scripture is for. Scripture exists for God’s glory, to reveal God. And of course, if our first question of scripture is “What does this text mean to me?” we run the risk of becoming little gods and goddesses of the bible. So, by grounding our bible reading in the meanings and arguments of the biblical authors we are necessarily stepping off the throne of biblical interpretation and allowing God’s revelation to speak authoritatively. In short, we ask “What did the author mean?” because we believe God in fact was speaking through that author.
